1-888-843-8860 | American Airlines Name Change Policy
American Airlines confirms that every passenger's details in the flight ticket are in line with their TSA (Transportation Security Administration) PreCheck application required documents and then only allows the passenger to travel. However, as per American Airlines name change policy, if the passenger’s name is misspelled or inverted, there is no last name on the ticket, or there is an incorrect guardian/legal/maiden/married/divorce name, there is scope for correction, as long as the passenger’s age and gender stay the same as original on the Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD). But a complete name correction on American Airlines to another person’s name on unused tickets is still not permissible.
If after booking you realize that you have an incorrect name on your American Airlines flight ticket, we are here to help you! In this post, we will be discussing how to go for minor or major American Airlines passenger name correction. For any assistance, feel free to call American Airlines support on this toll-free number: 1-888-843-8860.
What is American Airlines Name Change Policy?
American Airlines allows for minor and major edits in the name of the passenger on entirely unused, validated flight tickets. However, to correct the name on the American Airlines ticket, the passenger's date of birth and gender must match with input in the initial Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD) and the request must be made within 24 hours of departure, as the flight may be under the control of the airport. There is no change of flights or flight dates allowed when requesting a name change. The passenger will be reissued a ticket with a corrected name having the original ticket fare. No name correction fee, penalty fee, or additional monies apply.
Here are the different guidelines on American Airlines passenger name correction, applicable on both single and multiple name corrections:
Minor name correction- This is permissible only on itineraries having American Prime and American Eagle flights with the same PNR (Passenger Name Record). If the itineraries are ticketed in the “R” inventory, major name correction guidelines must be followed because of the system limitations that may lead to the automatic cancellation of segments booked in R. In the new/replacement ticket issued after the original fare ticket endorsement, a waver code: NC03AGCY should appear at the beginning of the endorsement/restrictions text.
Major name correction- This is permissible only on itineraries ticketed in “R” inventory, AA*/ codeshare flight segments, and other Airline prime flight segments with new PNR/Order issued. The itinerary in the new PNR/Order must have the same flights, dates, inventory, origin, destination, and routing as the original ticket. In the new/replacement ticket issued after the original fare ticket endorsement, a waiver code: MAJORNC should appear at the beginning of the endorsement/restrictions text.
Instant Upsell with necessary name correction- When the passenger confirms the issue of an Instant Upsell upgrade as an ancillary, then both minor and major name correction guidelines are followed, except the use of a waiver code. The waiver code for minor name correction with instant upsell is NC03AGCY/IU while for major name correction with instant upsell, it's MAJORNC/IU.
Infant name correction- For correction of the name of a passenger who is a lap infant in domestic or international itineraries, do it in the same PNR/Order as with the adult. Even if the itinerary is ticketed in “R” inventory, other airline prime flight segments, or other airline/codeshare, travel agents can make changes to the infant name without sending the infant name to another airline. A SSR message is generated to another airline showing that the infant will be traveling so there is no need for cancellation of the other airline space. There is no waiver code required. In the Secure Flight Passenger Data, the gender of the infant must be mentioned as FI or MI.
For a passenger child occupying a seat, minor and major name corrections are done as done with an adult traveling with the child.

How to Edit the name on an American Airlines booking
For correcting a passenger name on an American Airlines flight ticket, here are the steps to take for an American Airlines misspelled name fix:
Log in to SalesLink Self-Service
Under the Request Type, select the Service Type, and then Name Correction from the drop-down list
Enter the American Airlines PNR or Order
Select the passenger with a misspelled name
Verify the passenger type (Adult or child)
Click on the magnifying glass and select the ticket to be reissued.
Tell the reason for the name correction
Verify that the right segment details are mentioned
Click on Submit.
PNR/Order will be documented in either the remarks area or in the area of SSR (Special Service Request)/ ORI (Other Services Information) of the PNR/Order based on the passenger’s Global Distribution System (GDS).
After the correction, the documentation of change can be brought to the Airport to show the authorities that the name on the government-issued identification documents is the same as the name on the flight ticket.
To request a name correction, call American Airlines support at toll-free number: 1-888-843-8860 or do the same online by visiting American Airlines' official website. There might be a need to share relevant documents.
FAQs on American Airlines Name Change Policy
Is name change and name correction the same?
No. Name change means transferring the ticket to a different person, while name correction means fixing misspelled names or correcting the names to match with the TSA PreCheck required documents.
While creating a new PNR/Order for major name correction, what to do if an original ticketed cabin is no longer available?
The cabin upgrade and downgrade are not allowed. The passenger can update the Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD) at least 74 hours before the departure and be available at the airport with identification documents at the earliest to check in for the flight.
What if the passenger’s IDs contain the middle name but not the ticket?
The middle name can be requested to be included in the Secure Flight Passenger Data of the PNR. There is no need to issue a new ticket for this.
Is it possible to correct the name in the original PNR if having AA and other airlines separate tickets in the same PNR?
In such a case, as per American Airlines name change policy, the passenger will need to do name correction in the new PNR having American Airlines flights only, as per minor name correction guidelines. The passenger can even remove the other airline segments from the original PNR and do name correction in the original PNR for remaining American Airlines flights. Other airlines in the itinerary will have to be contacted for name correction guidelines.
